He was born on 12 January 1863 into a Bengali family of Calcutta. His father Vishwanath Datta was an attorney at Calcutta high court and his mother Bhubaneswari Devi was a housewife.

His Guru Ramakrishna Paramhansa helped him attain spiritual enlightenment and told him that the service of Jiva (Living beings) is the service of God. He then established Ramakrishna Mision, Ramakrishna Math ana Belur math for the upliftment of humanity. He left this world on the 4th of July, 1902 at the age of 39.

His mother, Bhubaneswari Devi, was a devout housewife. His mother believed in God which influenced Narendra to be inspired towards spirituality.

Initially, he had a quest about the existence of God. His search ends up when he met his guru Ramakrishna Paramahansa who brought him from darkness to light. His guru taught him how to meditate and answered him God lives within every human being. So, if we serve mankind, then we can serve God.

The teaching of his guru and Hinduism influenced him to an extent that he travelled all four directions to spread these teachings. He established “Ramakrishna Mission” which provides spiritual training and service to the poor and economically weaker section. His spiritual training centres are spread all over the world. He also established “Ramakrishna Math” & “Belur Math”.

Swamiji breathed his last at Belur Math, West Bengal on the 4th of July, 1902. According to his disciples, Vivekananda attained mahasamādhi.
